Are people with sight loss at a higher risk of catching Covid as their experience is often more tactile?

Anyone can put themselves at risk through touching things outside of their home environment and then touching their eyes, nose or mouth before thoroughly cleaning their hands. People with disability may be at greater risk of contracting Covid because of the need to touch things to obtain information from the environment or for physical support. The government guidance is clear on the dos and don'ts with regards to stopping the spread of infection:

Do

  • wash your hands with soap and water often - do this for at least 20 seconds
  • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
  • wash your hands as soon as you get back home
  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the crook of your arm (not your hands)
  • put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards

Don't

  • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean
