I have nystagmus, do you have any advice on how I can make the most of my sight?

Having nystagmus can cause reduced vision but there are lots of things you can do to help you make the most of your vision.

  • Take your 'null point' into consideration when choosing which position to look at things from - for example sitting on a particular side of the television or board at school can often help
  • Make sure your glasses or contact lens prescription is up to date. Although glasses and contact lenses can't correct nystagmus, they can ensure that you are getting the most from your vision. Having clearer vision can also help slow the eye movements
  • Make things bigger to make them easier to see like using large print books or turning up the print size on your computer, tablet or phone
  • Magnifiers can help with reading - a low vision assessment can help you find the right magnifier to help with certain tasks
  • Making things bolder can also help make them easier to see - such as using bolder pens
  • If you suffer from glare or light sensitivity, tinted glasses may be useful
  • Good lighting can be helpful. If you are also light sensitive, you can get advice about finding the right balance between managing light sensitivity and getting enough light to make the most of your vision by having a low vision assessment
  • Using a typoscope (reading guide) can also help reduce visual crowding on a page and help make reading easier.
