What adult support can be provided in exams?
The roles adults can play in supporting students with VI in exams and tests are very specific and must follow guidelines published by the relevant testing body. The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) and Standard Testing Agency (STA) produce updated guidance annually. The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) produces guidance relating to exams in Scotland.
The possible roles are:
-
readers
-
scribes
-
prompters
-
practical assistants.
Depending on the tests/exams these roles may need to be applied for and may also require supporting evidence. A school’s exams officer and staff member responsible for disability (SENCo, ALNCo or ASN Teacher) would normally work with a student’s QTVI to apply for exam access arrangements by an earlier deadline than standard exam applications.
Further information about exam arrangements and access for pupils with vision impairment can be found on our Access to exams and tests webpages.
