How can I make my domestic appliances easier to use?

There are a number of ways to make your appliances easier to use including:

Labelling

You can label the different functions and settings of your appliances using Tacti-Mark or Bumpons.

Tacti-Mark is a liquid which goes hard when dry and Bumpons are small raised stickers, which are available in a variety of different colours and sizes.

Both can be used to mark a particular button or dial positions, for example where the 30 degree wash is on your washing machine.

More information on labelling in general can be found on RNIB's web page on labelling.

Specialised appliances

There are also specialised appliances which can be adapted to make them easier to use for people with sight loss. These include talking kitchen equipment, microwaves, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and thermostats.  When purchasing a new appliance speak with the store as they may be able to liaise with the Manufacturer on your behalf to arrange for the machine to be adapted.
