What's the difference between DAB and DAB+ and will it affect me?
DAB technology has been upgraded to DAB+ which allows you to listen to more radio stations and provides better sound quality. As DAB+ converts sound in a different way to DAB this means your DAB radio will not be able to pick up any stations that switch to DAB+ (Classic FM is one example).
It maybe possible for you to upgrade your DAB radio to DAB+ via a firmware download, so it’s worth checking with your manufacturer, before buying a new radio.
You should also remember there are no plans to switch off the FM signal, so whilst you may not be able to get your favourite station on DAB, you should still be able to listen on FM.
The shift to DAB (digital audio radio) was initially prompted in 2015 when the UK government planned to turn off the FM signal, meaning you would need a DAB radio to continue listening to your favourite stations. However due to low take up it this has been delayed to at least 2030.
