What is optic neuritis?

Optic neuritis means inflammation (swelling) of your optic nerve. For most people this can cause some problems with vision in the short term. However, optic neuritis normally gets better on its own and does not usually cause any lasting loss of vision.

Optic neuritis typically causes vision to gets worse over a period of several days to two weeks and then usually begins to improve. If you have had optic neuritis once, there is some risk that it you may develop it again in either eye.
