Can I get free glasses for my child, as they have vision impairment?
It may be possible to get free glasses, lenses or contact lenses for your child if they are diagnosed with a vision impairment that meets the criteria of Sight Impaired or Severely Sight Impaired. A CVI or VINCYP registration is not normally required if alternatives such as a letter of diagnosis detailing visual acuity, visual fields and/or a prescription is provided.
NHS vouchers help towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses for children who are aged under 16, or aged under 19 and in full-time education.
Specsavers offers free or heavily subsidised glasses for Kids and teens under the NHS optical voucher scheme. For more information visit Specsavers webpage.
If you paid for glasses or contact lenses and think you may have qualified for a voucher, you can claim a refund. You'll need a receipt for the glasses or contact lenses you've bought, including the amount you paid and the date of payment.
You can find out more and download a claim form (HC5 claim form for optical charges) on the NHS website.
