Can you get a discount on vehicle tax if you have sight loss?

Although you can drive with some sight conditions (such as monocular vision) the majority of people with sight loss don't drive. However, you can still claim a reduction if you have a nominated driver, if the vehicle is registered in your name or that of your nominated driver.

You do not have to pay vehicle tax if you get one of these benefits:

  • High rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance
  • Enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment
  • Enhanced rate mobility component of Adult Disability Payment
  • High rate mobility component of Child Disability Payment
  • War Pensioners Mobility Supplement
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment

You need to apply to be registered as not having to pay vehicle tax - you can't just stop paying it. You can find information on how to apply on the GOV.uk website.

You can get 50 per cent off your vehicle tax if you get one of these benefits:

  • Standard rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment
  • Standard rate mobility component of Adult Disability Payment

You need to apply for the discount. You can find information on how to apply on the gov.uk website.
