Is there any equipment available to assist my child with a vision impairment?

There is a range of optical/non optical equipment that you can consider trying to see which suits your child best, including:

Non optical - these are things with no lenses:

  • reading stands
  • bold markers
  • dark lined paper
  • large print calculators
  • digital recorders
  • visors and tinted glasses to reduce glare
  • good lighting
  • coloured overlays to provide contrast
  • slates and stylus'
  • talking dictionaries

Optical and low vision devises - these are things that can be used to adjust and enhance images and text:

  • hand held magnifiers
  • large free standing magnifiers
  • screen magnifiers

There are a number of resource centres around the UK you can visit to view, try and buy a range of equipment. You can find your nearest resource centre on the Sightline Directory by entering your postcode and the search words 'resource centre'.

Sight Village also run exhibitions at various locations in the UK where charities and product suppliers have equipment on display.
