Can a child with a vision impairment use a cane?
Children can use different types of cane to enable them to find their way around safely if they choose to and if it’s appropriate for their level of mobility. An Habilitation Officer (RQHS) from the local authority (England, Scotland, Wales) or Education Authority (Northern Ireland) can help a child or young person to decide if and how they would like to use a cane and any other mobility and habilitation techniques.
Guide Dogs also offer a mobility training service and some videos, hints and tips can be found on the Guide Dogs website.
