How do I have Windows Narrator start when my computer starts?

Windows allows you to have the Narrator screen reader start when the computer starts and when you reach the desktop. You can also set it to start on the log-in screen. To do this, select the Start button - Settings - Ease of Access - Narrator.

Alternatively, you can utilise keyboard shortcut keys to access the Ease of Access centre (Windows Key and U), tab once and arrow down six times to Narrator and press enter. Press the tab key to get into the main window.

Keep pressing the tab key until you reach the options for start up. There are several different fields that can be changed:

  • Allow the shortcut key to start Narrator: this means you can use Windows, Control and Enter to start and stop Narrator.
  • Start Narrator after sign-in: this is a check box and can be activated by pressing the space bar to change the value. Checking the box means that Narrator will start when you reach the desktop.
  • Start Narrator before sign-in: this is a check box and can be activated by pressing the space bar to change the value. Checking the box means Narrator will start before the sign-in screen, making it easier to enter user names and passwords.
  • Show Narrator Home when Narrator starts: this is a check box and can be activated by pressing the space bar to change the value. Checking the box means the Narrator Welcome screen (which contains the commonly used adjustments) is displayed each time Narrator is used.
  • Minimise Narrator home to the system tray: this means that even though the welcome screen will come up, it will be hidden in the notification area which can be accessed later if needed.
