My child with vision impairment is nervous about trying a new activity, how can I encourage them?

Both you and your child may be nervous about starting a new activity, and that’s absolutely fine. Nerves are what makes it exciting, and overcoming those nerves builds confidence.

Research the activity together so you can explain what they can expect and what will happen. Speak to the organiser or coach and explain your fears and concerns. Ask if you can practice the activity alone or in a small group first. Have patience – it may take more than one session before your child adapts or really enjoys it.

You could try taster sessions such as British Blind Sport’s Have a Go and Family Days.

If your child is struggling with balance, orientation, or any other part of mobility and habilitation, a Habilitation Specialist (RQHS) may be able to support.

Your child may want to talk about anything they enjoyed, have questions about or found challenging. Make some time to talk with them after each session.
